Diffusion Flashcards
1
Q
What is diffusion?
A
The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
2
Q
Do particles diffuse up or down the conc grad?
A
Down
3
Q
Is diffusion passive or active?
A
Passive - does not require energy.
4
Q
What factors affect the rate of diffusion?
A
- Conc grad - higher = faster rate
- Thickness of exchange surface - thinner = faster rate
- Surface area - larger = faster rate
5
Q
What is facilitated diffusion?
A
The diffusion of particles through carrier proteins or channel proteins in the plasma membrane
6
Q
How do carrier proteins work?
A
- Large molecule attached to carrier protein
- Protein changes shape
- Releases the molecule on opposite side of membrane
7
Q
How do channel proteins work?
A
Form pores in the membrane for charged particles to diffuse through
8
Q
What factors affect the rate of facilitated diffusion?
A
- Conc grad - higher = faster (until a point)
- Number of channel/carrier proteins (once all in use facilitated diffusion can’t happen any faster unless conc grad is increased)
