Diffusion Flashcards
Diffusion is a passive process because …
It only depends on the KE of particles and doesn’t require ATP
Diffusion definition
Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Simple diffusion
Diffuse through membrane without help of another molecule
E.g. Small, fat soluble molecules (steroids, CO2, O2, lipids)
Facilitated diffusion
Uses protein channels or carriers
Channel = any charged particle (Na+, Ca2+) or water (which uses aquaporins)
Carrier = large molecules (amino acids, glucose)
Equilibrium
When there is an even distribution of particles
Net movement
Overall movement of particles in one direction until equilibrium is reached
Things that affect diffusion
Temperature Size of molecule Surface area Diffusion distance Concentration gradient
