Diffusion Flashcards
What is the definition of diffusion?
The net movement of particles down a concentration gradient from a region of high concentration to low concentration
Is diffusion an example of active or passive transport?
Passive
What is passive transport?
Transport which doesn’t require energy in the form of ATP
What two things affect diffusion across a membrane?
- Surface area of the exhange surface
- Thickness of the membrane which affects the distance that diffusion occurs across
What type of molecules cannot diffuse across the phospholipid bilayer?
Hydrophyllic polar molecules and ions
Give the two things which affect the rate of diffusion
- Temperature
- Concentration gradient
Give the two things which affect the rate of diffusion across a membrane
- Surface area of exchange surface
- Thickness of membrane which affects the distance that diffusion occurs across
+ (in facilitaded diff. the number of channel proteins and carrier proteins)
Name the two types of proteins involved in faciliated diffusion
- Protein channels
- Carrier proteins
Describe how carrier proteins faciliate the diffusion of molecules/ions across a membrane in facilitated diffusion
- The binding site in carrier proteins are specific to a particular molecule
- When the molecule binds to the protein
- The protein will change shape to allow the molecule through the membrane
Describe how channel proteins faciliate the diffusion of molecules/ions across a membrane in facilitated diffusion
- Channel proteins are specific to a particular molecule
- They contain water which allows polar molecules to move through it
Is facilliatated diffusion an active or passive process
Passive
always write this first in long descriptive answers ab/ facilitated diffusion/diffusion
What is the rate of faciliated diffuion also dependant on that normal diffusion is not
The number of channel and carrier proteins in the phospholipid bilayer
