Diffusion Flashcards
What is Diffusion?
Net movement of molecules or ions from an area of a high concentration to an area of a low concentration
What is a passive process?
Doesn’t require any energy as the particles are moving down their concentration gradient
What are the factors affecting Simple diffusion?
Concentration Gradient, Membrane thickness, Surface area and Temperature
What is the relationship of Concentration Gradient?
Greater the concentration difference, the faster the rate of diffusion
What is the relationship of Membrane Thickness?
The thinner the membrane, the faster the rate of diffusion
What is the relationship of Surface Area?
The larger the surface area, the faster the rate of diffusion
What is the relationship of Temperature?
The higher the temperature, the faster the rate of diffusion
What is Facilitated Diffusion?
Diffusion involving the presence of protein carrier molecules to allow the passive movement of substances
What is a Carrier protein?
Move large molecules across the membrane. Larger molecules attach and the protein changes shape releasing the molecule on the other side of the membrane
What is a Channel Protein?
Form pores for charged particles to diffuse through. No changing shape, simple tunnel which allows charged particles to cross the membrane
What are the factors affecting Facilitated Diffusion?
Concentration Gradient and number of Channel or Carrier proteins
What is the relationship of Concentration Gradient?
Greater the concentration difference, the faster the rate of diffusion
What is the relationship of Number of Channel or Carrier proteins?
The greater the number of Channel or Carrier proteins in the plasma membrane the faster the rate of Facilitated Diffusion
