Diffusion Flashcards
Diffusion
The net movement of molecules or ions from a region where they are more highly concentrated to one where their concentration id lower until evenly distributed.
Facilitated diffusion
Making the diffusion of molecules that cannot be diffused through the cell membrane
Passive transport using the kinetic energy of the particles
Done by
1. Protien channels
2.Carrier proteins
Protein channels
Water filled hydrophilic channels across the membrane
Allow water soluble ions to pass through
Selective and only open with the presence of a specific ion
If the ion is not present, the channel will not open
The ions bind with the protein and change its shape in a way that closes one side of the membrane and closes the other
Carrier proteins
When the molecule specific to the protein is present, it binds with the protein.
This changes the shape such that the ion is released.
No external energy is needed and the ions go to the lower concentration.
