Diffusion Flashcards
What is osmosis?
a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from high concentration to low.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the process of moving molecules across a cellular membrane through the use of cellular energy.
What is one example of diffusion?
The perfume of a flower that quickly permeates the still air of a room.
What is one example of osmosis?
When placing a red blood cell in any hypertonic solution, there will be a movement of free water out of the cell and into the solution.
What is one example of acive transport?
Active transport occurs in the gut wall.
What is a semi permiable membrane?
A membrane which is only permiable to specific or certan sized molecules.
What is the concentration gradient?
The speed of which diffusion takes place.
Why would diffusion occur faster in a room with a radiator than in a room with nothing?
because of convection currents in the air.
What is a hypertonic solution?
Any external solution that has a high solute concentration and low water concentration compared to body fluids.
