Differential Equations Flashcards
1
Q
What is a differential equation?
A
An equation that contains a derivative or a differential.
2
Q
What is the order of a differential equation?
A
The highest order derivative that appears in the equation.
3
Q
What is the separation of variables method?
A
dy/dx = f (x, y) = u(x) v(y)
4
Q
Outline the steps of the separation of variables.
A
- Rearrange the equation so there is one variable on either side of the equal sign.
u(x)dx = v(y)dy - Integrate both sides.
- If boundary conditions are known use them, if not add a constant of integration (+c).
5
Q
How do you solve a second order differential equation?
A
Integrate twice.
