What is a supplier?
A suppler is another industry business that sells products to hospitality businesses.
Types of suppliers
Wholesalers, Retailers, Cash and carry, Daily market, Specialists suppliers.
What do wholesalers do?
They buy in stock in large quantities. They sell onto retailers to deliver to the hospitality business.
What do retailers do?
Retailers buy goods in bulk from wholesalers. They then sell to consumers in smaller quantities at a higher price than the wholesaler. Retailers sell from conveniently located shops. Some retailers offer ‘home delivery’ which businesses can use to but you cannot buy in bulk from them.
What do cash and carrys do?
They trade in a similar way to wholesalers but they operate large stores which are open to the general public. Products are cheap because you can buy them in bulk and have to pay for your goods there and then. They do not deliver so customers have to collect their goods themselves.
What do daily markets do?
Markets are a collection of stalls where the stallholders sell their produce to the public. Specialist items are often available as well as basic items. They can be a good value for money but never as cheap as buying in bulk from a large wholesaler. They do not deliver.
What do specialist suppliers do?
They sell unique goods that most of the time is not available anywhere else. They are usually a lot more expensive.
What is a company nominated supplier?
A businesses main or preferred supplier. Hospitality businesses will have a contract to use that supplier for a set period of time.
