marble statue, more naturalistic than the others. has rounded legs, broad shoulders. athletic body.
Discobolos
created with same naturalistic components but with poses more free and with movement.

asymmetrical, and has a big dramatic effect. like a relief statue with no background.
Laocoon
depicted people and a priest and his son’s being killed by a serpent. very strong and muscular and shows a tragedy.
Ancient Greek connections
all influenced by Kouros and are naturalistic. more detail and muscle added over time. and more realistic.
Augustus of Prima Porta
seen as a figure of authority and has similar style to classical sculptures. impression of simplicity and shows he wanted to bring peace to Roman Empire.
Augustus Sculpture
shown with youthful features, although he was 40 when it was made. influence of Greek athletic sculptures are evident in head, face, legs and pose.

- seen addressing a group of people.
- Julius caesar type clothing portrays him as a powerful leader.
- heroic characteristics - no shoes, no foot protection needed.
David by Michelangelo
made of marble, and is out of proportion (big hands and feet) and was “ideal human form” very naturalistic and disproportionate upper body.
Michelangelo
painter and sculptor, main interest was human body and thought of himself as a sculptor.
Rubens
well known for portraits and landscapes and history paintings.
Rape of Daughters of Leucippus
- lots of movement and colour.
- lots of dark and contrast (baroque)
- dark and twisted.
- exaggerated postures and action filled painting, just like Michelangelo paintings.
Rococo
light hearted, not very serious painting style.
The Swing by Fragonard
- man pushing woman on swing while other man looks up her skirt.
- pastel pinks and greens used to show how light the painting was. big contrast to serious baroque and renaissance paintings.
Early Christian art
depicted resurrection of bodies, mainly people and Christians. depicting Christ or God was disputed for many years before someone did.
Islamic Art
featured either geometric patterns or people and animals. as iconography (depicting Allah or worshipping an object as an idol) was prohibited.
