What type of material should be used for wires?
For cables the material must be a good conductor of electricity, lightweight and strong.
It should not easily stretch or snap and should be resistant to corrosion.
Why are copper not used for overhead electricity cables?
Even though it is the best electrical conductor it’s tensile strength is quite low and it has a high density meaning it’s too heavy to be used over head.
What metal is used overhead?
Aluminium as it is a better conductor and less dense than steel even though it might not be as strong as steel.
What must insulators do?
Prevent electrical current passing from the cable to the pylon.
