Different kinds joints in the skeleton Flashcards
Joints
Are any points where 2 or more bones meet. The bones that meet at a joint are called the articulating bones of the joint.
A synovial joint
It’s a joint that allows a wide range of movement and has a joint capsule enclosing it.
Ball and socket joints are hinge joints.
A ball and socket joint
Allows movement in nearly every direction. The end of a bone fits into a cup-like area of another bone. E.g. at the hip joint, the head of the femur sits in the socket of the pelvis.
A hinge joint
Allows movement in only one direction. This joint is able to bend and straighten like the hinge on a door. E.g. the elbow joint between the humerus in the upper arm, and the radius and the ulna in the upper arm.
Ball and socket joints examples
Hip- pelvis and femur
Shoulder- humerus and scapula
Hinge joints examples
Knee- femur and tibia
Elbow- humerus, radius and ulna
