undifferentiated cells that differentiate into any type of cell found in the body. not specialised
embryonic stem cells
sperm fertilises an egg and it grows to form a ball of cells known as an embryo. found in the inner layers are stem cells. they can be adapted to any type of cell in the body. advantage is they are younger and quicker at differentiating compared to adult cells
stem cell technology
identify drugs can make treatments and cures for: leukaemia parkinsons and alzerimers heart disease pancreatic cells
plant stem cells
meristems found in tips and shoots. the cells not meristems have ability to divide over and over to product non specialised cells. some cells continue to divide allowing plants to grow taller
benefits
fight problems in body we couldn’t before
helps replace damaged cells
new medicines can be found
concerns
using embryonic cells is playing with life
results are unpredictable
