What are the different food categories?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Fibres, Fats and Water
What category would bread fit in to?
Carbohydrates
What are the 9 major organs of the digestive system?
mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancras, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine & anus
What does the mouth do?
It produces saliva which moistens food so it can break down more easily later.
What does the esophagus do?
It transports food entering the mouth through the throat and into the stomach.
What does the stomach do?
It holds the food & mixes it with acid and enzymes which breaks down the food into a liquid or a paste.
What does the pancreas do?
It produces enzymes that help to digest food, especially proteins.
What does the gallbladder do?
It stores a thick liquid called bile produced by the liver to help us digest fat.
What does the liver do?
The liver creates bile and then it goes to the gallbladder to be held until needed.
What does the small intestine do?
It helps to further digest food coming from the stomach and it absorbs nutrients so that they can be used in the rest of your body.
What does the large intestine do?
It absorbs water, produces & absorbs vitamins.
What does the anus do?
The anus excretes. Whether it is liquid, solid or gas. It also controls when and when you excrete.
What are the three key enzymes?
Lipases, Amylase & Maltase
What does amylase do?
It turns starch into sugar.
It is made in the pancreas.
What does lipase do?
It breaks down lipids (fats and oils) into acids.
