Diet + Nutrition Flashcards
What are the daily recommendations for men and women calories?
Men - 2500
Women - 1900
What are carbohydrates essential for?
- Energy production
- Cell division
- Formation of molecules
Define complex carbohydrates:
Stored as glycogen in liver and muscles. Takes 2-4 to break down
Define simple carbohydrates:
Circulate as glucose in the blood stream. 1-2 hours to break down
Example of complex and simple carbohydrates:
Complex= Pasta/bread
Simple= Syrup and sugar
What are proteins essential for?
Growth and release of cells and tissues. Used to make haemoglobin, enzymes and collagen. Last resort for energy
Protein example:
Chicken/egss
What are fats used for?
Insulate nerves, form cell membranes and cushion organs. Used as backup fuel for energy production.
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats?
Saturated fats are mainly from animal sources
Unsaturated fats are mainly from plant sources
Saturated and unsaturated fat examples:
Saturated- butter
Unsaturated- avacado
What are minerals?
Inorganic nutrients used to maintain body functions
What are iron, phosphorus and calcium used for?
Iron- Produce blood cells (haemoglobin) and to carry oxygen around the body
Phosphorus- Aids muscle contraction
Calcium- Beneficial for bone and tooth health
What does fibre do?
Assists the function of the large intestine. (aids digestion)
A high fibre diet can refuse cholesterol, risk of diabetes and obesity
What is the role of vitamins?
They are essential organic nutrients that help maintain body functions.
What are the two types of vitamins?

What are fat soluble vitamins?
They are stored in the body and found in fatty foods (dairy and eggs)
Vitamin A, D, E, K
What are water soluble vitamins?
Not stored and found in fruit and veg
Vitamin C, B
What is water essential for?
Hydration, temperature regulation, chemical reactions and moving substances about the body.
What can dehydration lead to?
Cardiovascular drift (the progressive increase in heart rate and decrease in stroke volume)
