What causes obesity?

A

Obesity is caused when we consume more energy than our body requires. If this is not used up through activity it is stored in the body as fat. People who store up too much body fat are know as being overweight / obese.

What is coronary heart disease?

A

Coronary heart disease is when the coronary arteries (arteries that supply the heart with oxygen) become narrow, caused by a build up of fatty materials in their walls.

A

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a persons blood sugar level to become too high. There are two main types:
Type 1 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes

A

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose strength and are more likely to break. It occurs due to the natural ageing process. This results in a decrease in bone density.

How do we prevent obesity?

A

We prevent obesity by choosing healthier foods (whole grains, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and protein sources and drinking plenty of water).

Limiting unhealthy foods and finding more exercising.

We prevent CHD by eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, being more physically active, reducing alcohol, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol and keeping blood pressure under control.

We prevent diabetes by losing weight, being more physically active, eating healthy foods.

To prevent anaemia we should eat dark green leafy vegetables, eat cereals and bread with extra iron, eat pulses, beans and lentils.
