What is metabolism?
All the chemical reactions in cells
What is metabolic rate?
The rate at which all the chemical reactions occur in cells
What factors can affect metabolic rate?
Amount of exercise, proportion of muscle to fat in the body and inherited factors
What 7 things are needed for a balanced diet?
Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre
Why are carbohydrates needed by the body?
Carbohydrates include starch and sugars. Sugar is needed for respiration, in order to release energy
Why are fats needed by the body?
Fats are needed for energy and insulation
Why are proteins needed by the body?
Proteins are needed to build cells and repair tissue
Why are vitamins and minerals needed by the body?
Vitamins and minerals keep the body functioning healthily
What does malnourishment mean?
A person is malnourished if their diet is not balanced, this may lead to being underweight or overweight
What does obese mean?
Being very overweight, it can lead to health problems such as type 2 diabetes
What are statins?
Drugs taken to reduce cholesterol levels made by the body
What is cholesterol?
A waxy substance made by liver, used to strengthen cell membranes, make sex hormones and make vitamin D. Too much can increase the risk of heart disease
