Diesel Fuel and Storage Tanks Flashcards
What is diesel fuel?
It is a hydrocarbon composed of approximately 85% carbon and 15% hydrogen
What are the 9 different property characteristics of diesel?
Ignition quality, Energy content, Volatility, Viscosity, Pour point, Cloud point, Flash Point, Sulphur content, Water and sediment content
Cetane number
A measure of diesel’s ignition quality. the higher the cetane number the lower the self ignition temperature
Octane number
Gasolines rating system. Higher the number the more resistance to ignition.
Cetane numbers of summer and winter diesel
Winter #1 - 45-50
Summer #2 - 35-40
What is volatility?
The rate of evaporation of fuel
What are example temps of diesel pour points?
Winter -44C
Summer -23C
What is cloud point?
The point at which waxes start to solidify. Usually about 3-6C about pour point temp
What two major problems are created by burning sulphur in engine?
It produces undesirable exhaust emissions (SOx’s)
It produces highly corrosive gases that deteriorate engine and exhaust system
Fuel additives are separated into what 4 basic categories?
Engine performance, Fuel handling, Fuel stability, Contaminant control
Alcohol for de-icing diesel fuel?
Use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). No more then 0.5% concentration by volume
What fluid should be used to test injectors and fuel pumps?
Test oil
Most storage tanks are made of what?
Welded steel
The fuel outlet hose should be placed where (storage tank)?
3-4 inches from bottom of tank
What is the minimum distance between the suction and return line on mobile tank?
12”
