Diesel Engine Components Flashcards
In-Line Engine
Cylinders are numbered consecutively from the free end
V Engine
Cylinder numbering is consecutive for each bank starting from free end
Cylinder
Tube inside cylinder block, where piston slides
Cylinder block
Big chunk of metal that everything fits into
Cylinder head
Closes top of cylinder
Sump
Reservoir for lubricating oil
Piston
Enables compression and receives pressure forces
Piston rings
Provide sliding seal between piston and cylinder
Connecting Rod
Connects piston to crank shaft
Gudgeon pin
Connects piston to connecting Rod
Crank shaft
Turns reciprocating motion into rotary motion
Flywheel
Promotes smooth running engine using inertia
Camshaft
Actuated the valves driven by crank shaft, rotated at 50% speed of crank shaft. Controls opening and closing off valves
Valves
Opened the intake pats at the end of the exhaust stroke, during the induction stroke
Push rod
Transfer motion from cam shaft to rocker arms
Rocker arms
Transfers motion from push rod to activate valves
Fuel injector
Injects measured amounts of high pressure, atomised fuel into combustion chamber
Cylinder head
Closes the top of the Cylinder with Cylinder head gasket and hold injectors and valves
Cylinder head gasket
Makes a water, oil, gas and air tight seal between cylinder block and cylinder head
