reservation
noun - a place that has been set aside for nature or people to live there.
NEUTRAL
e.g. The Native Americans were forced off their land, and they were forced to live on a reservation.
idealism
noun- the practice of aiming for unrealistic ideals (perfection)
Hint: ideal = perfect

e.g. Her idealism was so strong that she believed she could achieve peace on earth
stereotype
noun- a common assumption about a person or a group based on race, looks, etc.

e.g. Examples of stereotypes are “all women are bad drivers” or “blondes have more fun.”
intimidate
verb - to scare or threaten someone (in order to make them do what you want)
NEGATIVE
e.g. The bully used insults and threats to intimidate the new kid.
contempt
noun - hatred, disgust, the feeling of looking down on someone or a group
NEGATIVE
e.g. The seniors treated freshmen with contempt.
tenacity
noun - the spirit of determination and persistence
POSITIVE
e.g. Her tenacity paid off; she pushed past her injury and went on to win a gold medal.
exploit
verb - to take advantage of someone or something

e.g. The girl was exploited by her pimp who took all her money.
hyperbole
noun - extreme exaggeration

e.g. When he said he was “dying of thirst,” it was hyperbole because he was actually only extremely thirst and was not actually dying.
irony
noun - when one thing is expected, but another thing happens (often funny)

e.g. The following is an example of irony: A student wakes up late and is late to school every day. The one day they wake up and get to school on time, it’s a snow day.
impediment
noun- obstacle, anything that gets in your way and keeps you from doing something

e.g. It was difficult to understand the young boy because he had a stutter, a type of speech impediment.
ostracize
verb - to exclude; to intentionally keep someone out of a group; to shun
NEGATIVE
e.g. Kristina used to be cool, but after she wore the awful outfit to school, she was ostracized by her former friends. No one would look at her or talk to her.
marginalize
verb - to push someone or a group of people aside, make them feel like they don’t matter
NEGATIVE
e.g. The Day of Silence brings awareness to the fact that members of the LGBTQ group have felt they have been silenced and marginalized by their peers or communities.
poverty
noun - the state of being extremely poor
NEGATIVE
e.g. He lived in poverty throughout his childhood and often only ate one meal a day.
retaliate
verb - to get back at someone for something they already did; to get revenge
NEGATIVE
e.g. She retaliated against her ex for how he treated her by slashing his tires.
oppress
verb - to keep someone or a group down or keep under power
NEGATIVE
e.g. In the 1950’s, African Americans were oppressed in society; they were not given the same rights and access as others.
