Dialysis Flashcards
CKD definition
Abnormality of structure or function, present for more than 3 months
ESRD definition
Need for dialysis or transplantation to sustain life
Not really based on GFR
2 main indications for chronic dialysis start
Metabolic abnormalities
Uremia
4 most important metabolic abnormalities that would be an indication to begin dialysis
Hyperkalemic (biggest one that kills patients)
Acidemia
Hyperphosphatemia
Severe anemia
3 treatment options for ESRD
Conservative
Dialysis
Transplant
Diffusive transport
Passive movement of solutes down a concentration gradient
Need a concentration gradient, small molecular weight solutes, and a membrane with appropriate charge and size
Responsible for clearance of most solutes
Convective transport
Active movement
Achieved by pressure gradient (do get some solute drag)
Water is pushed/pulled through the membrane
