Dialysis Flashcards

1
Q

When is dialysis started?

A

In chronic patients when GFR < 10-15 mL/min/1.73 m^2 (of body surface area) or start in acute kidney injury if the following are refractory to medical treatment: (AEIOU) acidosis, electrolyte abnormality, ingestion, volume overload, uremia

Q

What are the physiological principles of dialysis?

A
  1. Diffusion: removal of solutes down a concentration gradient.
  2. Convection: removal of solutes by means of a hydrostatic pressure gradient

Q

How is hemodialysis access achieved?

A
  1. Surgeons create a fistula
  2. Arteriovenous graft

Q

Describe peritoneal dialysis

A
  1. Instead of using blood, you use the patient’s abdomen. The dialyzer is no longer a tube but is the peritoneal membrane itself
  2. This method avoids dramatic fluid shifts and drops in blood pressure. It also allows for home therapy.
