Q

How does a dialysis machine work?

A
  1. Blood is removed from an arm vein and moved through dialysis tubing using a pump.
  2. The machine uses a semi permeable membrane and a special fluid, dialysate, to filter human blood.
  3. The machine’s fluid contains equal glucose concentration to human blood, hence glucose doesn’t diffuse into the fluid via the membrane.
  4. Large proteins and red blood cells don’t diffuse by the membrane, but urea or uric acid and excess mineral salts do.
  5. Red blood cells, protein, and glucose remain in the clean blood.
  6. Clean blood is passed through a bubble trap to remove air bubbles before returning to the patient’s vein.

Q

What is a kidney transplant?

A

A kidney transplant or a renal transplant is the organ transplant of a kidney into a patient with end stage kidney disease. It is typically classified as a deceased daughter or living daughter transplantation depending on the source of the donor organ. There has to be a closed issue match, otherwise the body will reject the kidney and destroy it.
