Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment Planning Flashcards
1
Q
What is the goal of non-surgical periodontal therapy?
A
Render the roots biologically compatible with soft tissue by eliminating calculus and altered cementum and reducing periodontal pathogenic micro-organisms
2
Q
What does non-surgical periodontal therapy involve?
A
- OHI/charts
- supragingival PMPR
- subgingival PMPR
- re-evaluation after 10-12 weeks
3
Q
How is the long junctional epithelium formed? What else occurs during healing?
A
- epithelial cells multiply quickly producing a long JE
- new attachment by hemidesmosomes
Shrinkage of gingivae - as inflammation is reduced
Tightening and formation of gingival cuff
4
Q
How is the gingival cuff formed?
A
- tightening and formation of new collagen fibres around the tooth as inflammation is lost
5
Q
When devising a maintenance plan, what things should determine a recall time?
A
- susceptibility
- severity
- how difficult it was to control the disease
- any systemic conditions
- anything added intra-orally which may affect OH
- patients ability to attend
6
Q
What are some local prognostic factors?
A
- plaque
- organisms present
- pocket depth and location
- distribution and severity of LOA
- presence and severity of furcation
- restorative/endodontic condition
- activity of disease
- root length and shape
- tooth position
- calculus
7
Q
List some general prognostic factors:
A
- systemic health and immune status of patients
- hereditary factors
- aetiology
- age of patient related to LOA
- smoking status
- attitude and cooperation of patient
8
Q
Why is it difficult to estimate a prognosis?
A
- biological tissue response to treatment can vary between patients
- patients cooperation/motivation
9
Q
What are the 5 phases of treatment planning?
A
- initial examination and pain relief
- cause related non surgical therapy
- re-examination
- definitive treatment plan
- maintenance
