Clinical characteristics
- split between thinking and emotion
- involves psychotic symptoms where there is a break from reality
- patients lack insight into their condition
Positive symptoms
they are additional to normal life experiences (hallucinogenic and delusions are added into your daily life)
Negative symptoms
they take away from normal life experiences (alogia and avolition remove speech and motivation from your life)
Hallucinations
- usually take form of hearing voices which are usually critical and unfriendly
- additionally some people may also see, smell, taste and feel things that aren’t there
Delusions
an unshakable belief in something bizarre or untrue
Paranoid delusions
where the individual believes something or someone is deliberately trying to mislead, manipulate or hurt them
Delusion of grandeur
where the individual believes that they have some imaginary power of authority such as believing they are on a mission from god or a secret agent
Alogia (speech poverty)
Speech poverty
when a person loses their ability to speak fluently (reduction in the amount and quality)
Avolition
lack of motivation so don’t follow through with any plans/goals
- they neglect household chores or maintaining personal hygiene
- loss of persistence in work/education
