  1. Sick patient presents
  2. Likely cause?
  3. Can the likely bug grow on agar?
  4. Yes - culture and antimicrobial susceptibilities. No - immunoassay or molecule test (blood)
  5. Take the right specimen order the right test and store transport it correctly
  6. Results from lab
  7. Manage and treat patient
  8. Patient cured Yes, No - start again

How to take a blood culture?

A

Clean skin with iodine to prevent false results from skin flora.
Take 3x 10ml blood samples in 24 hr period
