DIAGNOSIS OF BONE LESIONS Flashcards
name 6 things a plain film image can tell us about a bone lesion ?
1) Location of the lesion (anatomical and location within the bone).
2) Zone of transition.
3) Type and extent of bony destruction.
4) Periosteal reaction.
5) Extent of soft tissue involvement.
6) Composition of lesion (lesion matrix)
Name 3 ways we can describe zone of transition ?
1) Sharply demarcated with a sclerotic border.
2) Sharply demarcated without a sclerotic border.
3) Ill defined.
What are the 3 main types of bone destruction ?
1) Geographic
2) moth eaten destruction
3)Permeative destruction
What is geographic destruction ?
Uniform bone loss with sharply outlined borders
What is moth eaten destruction ?
Multiple small lytic areas- Often clustered together.
What is permeative destruction ?
Small ovoid lucencies or lucent streaks that are not ill defined.
How can you describe a lesion matrix ?
Lytic, sclerotic or mixed.
How can you tell if a lesion has a chondral (cartilaginous) matrix ?
The lesion will be made up of rings and arcs.
If a lesion was bone forming what would it look like ?
Fluffy, cloud like mineralisation.
Give an example of a bone forming lesion ?
osteosarcoma.
