What are the four categories of diagnostic techniques?
Observation

What is zheng?
Signs and symptoms; the foundation for analysis and determination of disease; termed “indicators/manifestations/evidence”
What is bing?
Disease; evolutionary process of a pathogenic factor; struggle between upright qi, pathogenic factors, and Yin/Yang disharmony; manifests in symptoms and stages specific to each stage of a disease
What is bian-zheng?
“Discrimination of patterns” or “differentiation of syndromes”; differential diagnosis
What are the key symptoms of Qi deficiency?
Tiredness later on in day or next day after doing something; pale, weakness, shallow respiration, low voice, spontaneous sweating
What are the key symptoms of Qi stagnation?
Pain that moves around or comes and goes, distension, depression, and irritability; Liver Qi stagnation is most common, resulting in depression
What are the key symptoms of Blood stasis?
intense, fixed, piercing pain; accumulations, dark complexion, low grade fever, varicose veins; dark red/purplish spots with macules
What are the key symptoms of Blood deficiency?
this will include parts of Qi deficiency; there is a downward precipitation of blood that does not stop; thinness, paleness, dryness, tension, scanty flow, thin/wiry/fine/choppy pulse
What are the key symptoms of Blood heat?
bleeding issues; blood flows out bright red and profusely; tongue crimson with possible prickles/spurs
