Bipolar 1
Manic phase for at least 1 week that leads to significant impairment (such as hospitalization).
Define manic
Manic: a period of extremely high energy or elevated mood. Interferes w/ daily functioning.
Bipolar 1 symptoms
-Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity.
-Decreased need for sleep.
-Increased talkativeness.
-Racing thoughts.
-Distracted easily.
-Increase in goal-directed activity.
-Engaging in activities that hold the -potential for painful consequences.
Bipolar 2
Hypomania (atleast 4 days) and at least one episode of major depression disorder (MDD).
Define hypomania
A milder form of mania- does not necessarily require hospitalization.
Major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms
-Depressed mood
-Changes of sleep (increased, decreased: quality decreased).
-Changes of appetite (increased or decreased).
-loss of pleasure in activities once enjoyed
-Restlessness or slowing down.
-Feelings of guilt or worthlessness.
-Indecision or difficulty concentrating
-Thoughts of suicide.
Cyclothymic disorder
Symptoms are similar to bipolar 2 w/ cycles of highs and lows but does NOT meet the criteria for mania or MDD.
