1

Q

how is type 2 treated?

A
  • dietary control to limit sugar intake
  • balance with appropriate exercise
  • may be supplemented by insulin injections/drugs that stimulate insulin production/drugs that slow down rate of absorption

14
Q

how does protein catabolism work?

A

break down of muscle protein to amino acids (as glucose not utilised as respiratory substrate)

  • excess aminoa cids converted into glucose and urea by deamination
  • increases excretion of nitrogen (urea) and raises blood glucose levels

Q

how does fats catabolism?

A

stored fats hydrolysed to fatty acids (used for respiration)

  • excess fatty acid oxidation produces acetyl CoA
  • converted into ketones by liver
  • ketones released into bloos - lowering pH (acidosis)
  • affects enzymes/proteins

Q

what is osmotic diuresis?

A

high concentration of glucose creates hypertonic urine reducing water absorption from collecting urine
- excessive urination
