Type 1
Childhood
Pancreas produces NO insulin (insulin dependent)
Type 2
Secondary to unhealthy life
Body resistant and insulin (insulin resistant)
DM symptoms for 1 & 2
Polyphagia (extreme hunger), weight loss, polyuria (lots of urine), polydipsia (extreme thirst), blurred vision, dehydration
Ketoacidosis = 1, but not for type 2
Dx for DM, fasting blood glucose
> 126 mg/dL
Dx for DM, random blood glucose
> 200 mg/dL
Dx for DM, HbA1C
4-6%
10% =immediate insulin therapy
Hypoglycemia = glucose < 70
Cold and clammy, give candy
Dizzy, faint, tachycardia, loss of conscious
Hyperglycemia = glucose > 300
Hot and dry, sugar high
Fruity odor, dry, thirsty, coma
Tips for DM
Exercise in morn
Good footwear
Carbs before exercise, sugar during if needed
