Diabetes Key Terms Flashcards
Glucagon 6
Hormone secreted by pancreatic endocrine cells that raise blood glucose levels.
Glucose 7 Tolerance Test
A test determining blood glucose levels in the blood or urine used to detect diabetes.
Homeostasis 1
The maintenance of relatively stable internal conditions under environmental conditions.
Hormone 4
Circulates in blood, produces effect on activity in cells.
Insulin 5
Hormone secreted by the pancreas, essential for regulation of glucose levels in the blood.
Negative 2Feedback
A primary mechanism of homeostasis that triggers a response that counteracts the initial fluctuation.
Positive 3Feedback
Feedback that tends to magnify a process
Type 1 Diabetes 8
Develops during childhood or adolescence. Characterized by deficiency of insulin, leading to high blood glucose levels.
Type 2 Diabetes 9
Develops especially in adults and most often obese individuals. Characterized by high blood glucose resulting from impaired insulin utilization coupled with the body’s inability to compensate.
