Diabetes Flashcards
1
Q
what is diabetes
A
a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causing elevated levels of glucose in the blood
2
Q
in type 1 diabetes
A
the problem is that the pancreas stops making insulin. usually diagnosed in children and young adults
3
Q
in type 2 diabetes
A
the body stops responding to normal or even high levels of insulin, and over time, the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin, calls don’t respond to the receptors, and it doesn’t get in. Gluocse remains in the blood.
4
Q
glucose
A
- your body processes the digested food by breaking down much of it into this, which is used for fuel
- it is sent through your bloodstream to nourish the trillions of cells of your body
5
Q
insulin
A
- the cells can’t use the sugar (glucose) without insulin, which is made in the pancreas
- it stimulates cells throughout the body to take glucose out of the bloodstream
- major target celsl are found in the livefr, skeletal muscles, and fat tissue
- prevents the level of glucose in teh blood from rising too rapidly and ensures teh axcess glucose is stored for future use
6
Q
glycogen
A
- gluocse taken out of circulation is storesd as this in the liver and skeletal muscles
7
Q
glucagon
A
- withing 1-2 hours after a person has eaten, when the level of blood glucose drops, glucagon is released from the pancreas
- it stimulates the liver to break down glycogen and releases glucose into the blood to help raise the blood glucose levels back to normal
8
Q
when glucose levels are high, what else is high?
A
insuline levels
9
Q
when glucose levela are low, what is high?
A
glucagon levels
