D.H. Ratey Flashcards
How do you find the domain of a rational function?
Domain is the set of all real values of x except those that cause there to be a zero in the denominator.
How do you determine holes in a rational function?
A hole is a place where the graph does not exist. After factoring, if a factor cancels, there is a hole. Set factor equal to zero to find x, then plug into new simplified function to find y.
How do you find roots of a rational function?
Set the top equal to zero and solve for x.
How do you find vertical asymptotes of a rational function?
Set the bottom equal to zero and solve for x.
tangency in rational functions
If a factor in the top is raised to an even number, the function will bounce/touch/be tangent at that root.
Togetherness of a rational function
If there is a factor on bottom that is raised to an even number, the graphs behavior at that asymptote will be coming together.
y intercept
set x=0 and solve for y
End Behavior Asymptotes-Degree bigger on bottom
y=0
End Behavior Asymptotes-Degree bigger on top
oblige asymptote, use long division to determine equation.
End Behavior Asymptotes-Degree is even
y=ratio of leading coefficients.
