DH 294 Flashcards
Reasoning for tooth selection for sealants:
Teeth should be caries susceptible but non-carious fissures in occlusal areas which may be occlusal pits and fissures, Buccaneers pits, and cingulum pits of teeth.
What’s the purpose of sealants?
To prevent decay in the pits and fissure of the teeth by creating a physical barrier which prevents oral bacteria and their nutrients from collecting within a pit and fissure which are essential in creating the acid environment and initiating dental decay
How is a tooth determined susceptible to caries?
- Presence of deep and narrow pits and fissures
- Is the patient or parent interested in preventative care?
- Age of the patient
- Existing caries or restorations
Optimal choices for sealants?
Newly erupted permanent teeth
Lingual surfaces of anterior teeth with fissures
Occlusal surfaces of older people with reduced salivary flow
Specific populations… ie. Low income, disabled
Children who are caries susceptible/ no f2
The 2 types of sealants?
- Resin Monomer
2. Titanium Dioxide
