Philosophy consist of:
Metaphysics, epistemology, logic, axiology
Metaphysics
explores fundamental questions about the nature of reality, existence, and the relationship between the physical world and abstract
Epistemology
examines concepts such as truth, belief, evidence, skepticism, perception, reasoning, and the methods we use to acquire knowledge
Axiology
the study of values and judgments about what is valuable or important. Includes Aesthetics and ethics
Aesthetics
Study of beauty- is it objective?
Ethics
The study of morals. Includes metaethics, normative ethics and applied ethics
Metaethics
metaethics is like philosophy about the nature of morality itself, exploring the deeper aspects of ethics and moral concepts
Normative ethics
frameworks and theories to figure out how we should behave based on our moral values and beliefs. providing practical guidance
Applied Ethics
using ethical theories to figure out what the right course of action is in various real-world scenarios. EX: Bioethics
Permissible
Ok, allowed, no violation of morals
Impermissible
Morally not okay, a VIOLATION of morals
Obligatory (ah-blig-a-tory)
Required, impermissible not to do
Supererogatory
Above the call of morality, heroic, generally a risk to you, NOT impermissible
Common Morality
Universal/Objective. There are right/wrong answers to questions even if people don’t know or do
Moral relativism
Preferences based on culture. Does not support progress- they have theirs, we have ours mentality makes no room for anyone to change or grow.
