What is Devolution ?
The decentralisation of power from central government to subordinate levels of government such as local authorities, cities and regional assemblies
Define decentralisation
The lending of power/ movement of power from Westminster (central point of power).
What is Parliamentary Sovereignty ?
Parliament that has supreme legislative authority
What method of voting is used for SMP’s ?
AMS (additional members system)
What are the three types of Scottish devolved power ?
-Administrative = govern their region
-Legislative = law making
-Fiscal = vary taxes
What were the aims of the Welsh Assembly ?
-Closer ties with England
-Welsh control over Education
-administrative and legal powers
What is the Good Friday Agreement ?
Due to the troubles in Northern Ireland the agreement was created to unite peace between protestant and catholic
What are the general issues around Devolution ?
-Seen as first steps towards Federalism
-Long term break ups of the Uk are inevitable
-Rejection of English assembly means West Lothian question is raised
What has the Uk constitution changed to ?
Quasi-federal rather than Unitary
What voting system does England use ?
First -past- the- post
What voting system does Scotland and Wales use ?
Additional members system
What voting system does Northern Ireland use ?
Single transferrable vote
Which voting methods are proportional ?
Single Transferrable Vote and Additional members system which can often cause minority or coalition govt
What voting method is majority based ?
First-Past-The-Post which causes not full representation
