Anaphora
Device of repetition in which the same expression is repeated at beginning of successive phrases
Aporia
Expression of doubt by which speaker appears to be uncertain at to what to say, do, etc
Antithesis
Opposition or contrast of ideas or words in a balanced or parallel construction
Ex: “To be or not to be”
Apostrophe
A sudden turn from the general audience to address a specific group or person, thing, etc
Cause and effect fallacy
Suggests first of two events caused the second, when in fact, the effect may have an entirely different cause
Dramatic Pause
Using strategically placed pauses
Either or fallacy
Involves a situation in which only two alternatives are considered, when in fact there are more options
Hasty generalization
Draws a general rule from a single, perhaps a typical case
Parallelism
Technique of arranging words, phrases, clauses or larger structure by placing them side by side and making them similar in form
Loaded words
Words with emotional connotation, sway reader’s opinion
Rhetorical Questions
Question that does not expect an answer
Red herring
Raises an irrelevant issue to draw attention away from the real issue
