What is Deviance?
is behaviour that goes against the dominant social norms of a specific group in society.
Define Values
The General principle or guidelines for a law we should live our lives.
What are Norms?
Are specific Rules or socially accepted standards that govern people’s behaviour in particular situations.
What are Morals?
Often used to describe a set of principles, values and rules held by an individual, group, organizations or society as a whole
What does actus reus and mens rea mean
Actus reus - guilty act
Mens rea- guilty mind
What are the 3 Types of deviance
Admired,
Odd,
Bad
When does strict liability come into play
E.g. health and safety laws or TV licensing
When mens rea is not required due to the type of the crime
What is self defense
Harming someone as a means of protection
Is self defense a crime
Self defense isn’t a crime so long as the force used was reasonable in the situation
What is summary offence
Refers to a less serious offence
What is an indictable offence
More serious offences such as rape
What are the implications of deviance
Formal sanctions: imposed by officials such as courts or police
Informal sanctions: becoming socially isolated
Positive consequence: praise or a reward
