Prenatal
Age range:
From fertilisation until the time of birth.
Characterised by:
- Development of the bodily organs and structures
- Substantial growth - fastest growth period of all human lifespan stages.
Infancy
Age range: birth - 2nd birthday
Characterised by:
- Rapid growth
- Motor skills (can walk, use simple words, identify familiar people, play social games and throw tantrums).
Early childhood
Age range: end of infancy (2) - 6th birthday
Characterised by:
- Slow and steady growth
- Accomplishment of many new skills
- Learns social skills and will make friends
- Become toilet trained
Late childhood
Age range: 6 - 12th birthday
Characterized by:
- Slow and steady growth
- Many physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes. e.g. refining reading and writing skills, developing long-term memory, honing motor skills, understanding stereotypes.
Types of Development: Physical
Changes that occur to the body and its systems.
Characteristic for Youth:
Growth: People get bigger until the end of puberty.
Types of Development: Intellectual
The increase in complexity of process in the brain such as memory.
Characteristic for Youth:
Knowledge and memory: Range of information known becomes more complex as people develop.
Types of Development: Emotional
Experiencing the full range of emotions and being able to appropriately express them.
Characteristic for Youth:
Developing self-concept: Influences forming identity
Types of Development: Social
Refers to the increasing complexity of behavior patterns used in relationship with other people.
Characteristic for Youth:
Behaviors: Learning what behaviors are appropriate in a variety of situations.

Perceptions are the beliefs or opinions based of how things seem. Our perceptions will change as we move through the lifespan.
Perceptions of Youth
Positive:
1. Social connections
2. Best time of their lives
Negative:
1. They lack the maturity of past generations
2. Theu feel entitled to a decent life and want the world to provide it for them.
Why?
Perceptions of Adults
Positive:
1. Adults are wise and full of knowledge.

Negative:
1. Bad drivers
2. Burden on the healthcare system

A connection between two or more people
Types of Relationships: Family
Families are diverse and unique, they usually provide love, security, and support.
Types of Relationships: Friendships
Friendships are often based on common interests, they can be long lasting or short, and they usually offer support in difficult times. We rely on friends to help with decision making and they can be a good or bad influence.
