What are developmental theories?
A set of ideas that help us create a framework for us to understand and respond to children’s development.
What is the Psychosocial Theory?
- focuses on social-emotional development
- life seen in series/crises
- children need more positive experiences in each stage of development to reach full potential
What is the Maturational Theory?
- the belief that child doesn’t learn, but grow into skills
- interested in “norms” of development
- development unfolds
What is the Social Cognitive Theory?
- believes in reinforcement
- the belief that children imitate adult actions
- Albert Bandura –> adult interactions with clown doll, children responded the same way
What is the Behavioural Theory?
- B.F Skinner
- positive reinforcement is needed
- behaviour can be learned through experience
What is the Contextual - Social Cultural Theory?
- Lev Vygotsky
- Same as Piaget, children learn by doing
- emphasized role of adults
- adults scaffold children’s learning by asking questions (support)
What is the Cognitive Development Theory?
- Jean Piaget
- adults provide materials, set up the environment, and step aside
- belief that children learn through their experiences and being hands-on
