Substances that pass through the placenta’s screen and prevent the fetus from developing normally
Includes: alcohol, nicotine, drugs, viruses, toxins, radiation
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Large amounts of alcohol lead to this
Causes deformities, intellectual disability, death
Temperament
A person’s characteristic emotional reactivity and intensity
A baby’s temperament is apparent just a few hours after birth
Relatively stable personality aspect
Physical Development
Infant: 1st year
Toddler: 1-3 years
Child: Spans between toddler and puberty
Maturation
An orderly sequence of biological growth
Genetically programmed (nature) same for everyone
Can be adjusted by experience (abuse/deprivation)
