development of life of Earth Flashcards
list the early conditions on earth which allowed life to develop
1) presence of liquid water
2) temperature range
3) atmospheric gases
4) solar insulation
how does the presence of liquid water allow for the development of life
all organisms need water for survival
1) solvent- where most chemical reactions occur
2) transport within organisms- nutrients ect
3) temperature control - the evaporation of water absorbs heat causing a cooling effect
4) expansion when it freezes- causing it to become less dense and float preventing the convection current which may have cooled the water body and hence creating an insulating effect
5) high specific heat capacity- warms and cools very slowly therefore creating a stable environment
6) absorption of UV radiation -
how does Earths temp range allow for the development of life
most areas on earth are between 0-35 degrees so areas are warm enough to have liquid water but not too hot as to denature proteins
how do atmospheric gases allow for the development of life
1) CO2= photosynthesis and the synthesis of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids
2) Nitrogen for protein synthesis
how does solar insulation allow for the development of life
1) provides energy from photosynthesis
2) heat produced drives the water cycle
3) warms the oceans
