Development for Neuropsych Flashcards
Mentalism
The idea that the mind is separate from the body.
“Mind resides in the heart”
Brain Hypothesis
Refuted idea that the mind was in the heart
Aristotle
Created first theory of mentalism
Rene Descartes
Created the first theory dualism
Dualism
Believe the body is a machine and the commands are given by the mind.
Mind is in the pineal gland
Phernology
Different parts of the brain do different things. Parts of brain wouldn’t grow if not used. Disproved, but foundation laid for functional localization
Broca’s Area
Area of brain responsible for speech. Located in left frontal lobe
Broca’s Aphasia
Damage to Broca’s Area. Results in the incapability of producing speech even if you know what you are trying to say
Wernicke’s Area
Located behind Broca’s Area in the temporal lobe. Responsible for processing incoming information from the ear.
Wernicke Aphasia
Damage to Wernicke’s Area. Patient is capable of producing speech, but the speech is nonsensical and unorganized.
Wilder Penfield
Devised a technique for stimulating parts of the cortex while patient was awake. Was also able to create a map of the cerebral cortex
Penfield’s Cortical Map
Showed that certain parts of the body got more tissue in the cortex than others. Allows for different parts of body to be more sensitive to stimulus than others
Neuropsychology
Connection between human behaviour and the brain
Central Nervous System
Brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System
Somatic and Autonomic nervous systems
Patient H.M.
Had a lobotomy performed to help with consistent epileptic seizures. Although epilepsy was solved, H.M. began to suffer from severe short term memory loss.
Shows memory is located in many different parts of the brain
Ventral Pathway
What? pathway
Dorsal Pathway
Where? pathway
Importance of Ventral and Dorsal Pathways in Brain Mapping
Shows how the brain properly works and that no one specific area is responsible for a function. Other lobes can assist in certain actions.
