Development Dynamics Flashcards
How to measure development
GDP per capita ✅
Literacy rates✅
Length of Education ✅
Life expectancy✅
The extent of the global development gap
There is a north, south split with the exception of Australia ✅
Developed: The UK 🇬🇧 (HDI:0.922)
High emerging:China 🇨🇳 (HDI:0.727)
Low emerging: India 🇮🇳 (HDI:0.639)
Developing: Ethiopia 🇪🇹 (HDI:0.463)
How countries at different development stages have differing demographic data.
Demographic: the structure of populations.
Lower developed countries often have a low education and literacy rate, women often don’t work so have children young, and have loads of children to help on their farm. 🦔 🤱🏽
Highly developed countries often have a long life expectancy rate due to good healthcare, so there is often more Old people and less children than low developing countries👵🏼
What are the causes of Global inequalities
A big reason is trade. $6.8 trillion are spent in trade each year. China, United States, US, Russia, Germany, France, Scandinavia are responsible for almost half of that!!!undeveloped countries and landlocked countries struggle to trade, especially as undeveloped countries mostly sell primary products: Food
*landlocked, trade is difficult(no ports), not making money, poor.
*
Consequences Of Global Inequalities. ➡️Economic ➡️Social ➡️Political ➡️Enviromental
Economic:
➡️can’t afford to build relevant buildings or food/shelter and can’t afford to migrate from natural disasters
Social
➡️Disease leads to death—>(of parents) leads to orphans
Bottom up and Top down projects:
Bottom up:ideas made by the government or very large companies. Desisions are imposed on them.
Rostow and Franks theory
✅Rostows: Stage 1:Traditional society Stage 2:Pre-conditions for take off Stage 3:Take off Stage 4:drive to maturity Stage 5: age of high mass consumption
✅Franks:
Periphery: developing nations, process raw materials, depend on the core
Core: developed nations, make high value goods from the raw good imported from periphery
