development dynamics Flashcards
GDP
gross domestic product - the total value of all products and services within a country in a specific time period
HDI
human development index
mortality rates
the number of people who die each year per 100,000 people
how to calculate mean
sum of terms/number of terms
e.g. 5, 3 and 4 strawberries in each basket mean- 12/3=4
how to calculate ratio
a/b e.g
4:2=2
how to calculate mode
the number that appears the most e.g. 1,5,6,6,3,2,6 = 6
positive impacts of rapid economic development
- increase life expectancy
-healthcare improvements
-development of new technologies
negative impacts of rapid economic development
-not enough jobs
-rapid population growth due to decrease in death rates and increase in birth rates
developing population pyramid
pyramid shape
genders are similar
life expectancy is low
emerging population pyramid
leaf shape
high life expectancy
lots of people in 14-15 age group = high birth date
developed population pyramid
building shape
low death rate
most people aged 45-54
How can advances in communications be an advantage in development?
Communication-based development strategies can uncover underlying attitudes, adapt views, acquire new knowledge, and spread social messages to large audiences.
Narmarda river scheme
4500 dams including 14 super dams are being built along the Namarda river- top down
colonialism
When one country takes over another, often forcing its language and cultural values on those already living there
neo colonialism
when a foreign power indirectly controls or influences a territory and its people, usually through financial means.
top down development
decisions about development are made by governments or private
locals do not get a say
bottom up development
experts (NGO’s and charities) work with local communities to identify their needs
smaller schemes/project
Benefits of Narmarda river scheme
-providing clean drinking and bathing water for indias cities
-provides hydroelectric power for indias cities (HEP)
-A network of canals stretch out to 1.8 million hectares of farmland across the country to stop these states from suffering from droughts= crop loss and animals
negatives of narmarda river scheme
-local residents have been flooded and evacuated
-electricity only benefits cities, rural families cant afford
-good farmland has been flooded
-religious and historical sites have been flooded
-the region has a history of earthquakes, weight of large dams can trigger it
biogas
when cow dung, is compressed and used as electricity and gas
biogas benefits
-Smoke free kitchens – fewer –lung infections
-Instant heat
-No ash
-Time efficient
-Cattle are kept within the boundaries of the home, not grazing the woodlands,
eating sapling trees
-Micro bacteria is destroyed in the process of producing gas
-the sludge is used for fertiliser after processing gas
biogas negatives
-unstable
-hazardous
-contains impurities
-not efficient on a large scale
how does location influence development
if a countrys landlocked it makes it harder to import/export
countries with a coastline can easily trade
a countries climate and biome controls the amount of crops and food production
