Module 1: development delays
What is the impact of development delays? 4 impacts.
- lack of communication: poor speech, low motor skills and frustration.
- Mental health: low mental health, social isolation.
- Lack of gross/fine motor skills: not able to sit up, move around, feed themselves, play.
Impact of HL on child?
- delayed speech.
- learning problems
- delayed development
- trouble hearing sounds ending with s, ed.
- cant say letters sh, f, t, k
- low self esteem.
Audiological testing and its development:
ABR = Under 12 weeks.
Distraction testing = 6/7 months - 1 year. Child needs to be able to sit up and have good head control.
VRA = 7/8 Months to 2 years. sit up/good head control.
Play = 2 years +. Has to have understanding, ability to wait, good fine motor skills.
PTA = 7 years +. good understanding, ability to wait and good concentration levels.
How do parents know they child can hear?
From their personal child health records (the red book).
when testing development of a child what is APGAR?
APGAR are the signs, and the test usually lasts 1 min to 5 min.
A= Appearance (COLOUR)
P = Pulse (HEART RATE)
G = Grimace (REFLEX IRRITABILITY)
A = Activity (MUSCLE TONE)
R = Respiration (RESPIRATORY EFFECT)
interpret APGAR Results?
Score >7: baby is in good physical condition
* Score 4-6: baby requires special help in establishing breathing and other vital signs
* Score <3: 3 baby is in serious danger and immediate medical attention is needed
What exam is done at newborn to test development?
New born physical examination.
Includes testing:
Screening tests:
* Eyes
* Heart
* Hips
* Testicles
to examine the state of neurological system and physical development.
Examples of newborn reflexes:
- Eye blink - stimulate with light. protects infant from strong stimulation.
- Rooting - stroke cheek near corner of mouth. - child moves in direction - helps child find nipple for feeding. 3 weeks.
what is critical and sensitive period?
LP = Limited period in which child is biologically
prepared to acquire behaviours.
CP = Time in which this acquisition can occur, if
sufficient environmental input.
Gross motor skills?
child ability to use large muscles:
- Sitting
- Standing
- Walking
- Running
- Jumping
- Kicking
- Riding a bike
fine motor skills:
use of smaller muscles such as hands, fingers and wrist.
- Eating
- Drawing
- Writing
- Buttoning up a coat
social and emotional dvelopment:
emotional: how a child interacts with others.
- Baby smiling
* Waving bye-bye
* Taking turns in a game
social: learnt through play:
- Interacts with others
- Their relationships with family, friends and teachers
- How they cooperate and respond to the feelings of other
