Development And Growth Of Jaws Flashcards
Where does the head and neck region develop from?
Frontal prominence and branchial arches
What else is the 1st branchial arch also called?
Mandibular arch
Where does the maxillary process develop from?
The mandibular process
What does each branchial arch have?
A cartilage bar, muscle component and a developing neuro-vascular system
What is formed when branchial arches are invaded by cranial neural crest cells?
Ectomesenchymal cells
How is the early face formed?
Development of lateral and frontonasal/medial nasal processes from the frontal prominence
What does the fronto-medial nasal processes give rise to?
The fronto-medial nasal processes give rise to the middle portion nose and upper lip, anterior portion of maxilla and the primary palate
If in doubt about a development process, write?
Process involves proliferation and migration of ectomesnchymal cells, inducing a thickening of mesenchyme and controls differentiation processes.
What is palatogenesis?
Formation of the palate - closely linked to jaw development
What are the 3 outgrowths in the primitive oronasal cavity?
Nasal septum: downward growth from frontonasal process along the midline
2 palatine processes/shelves: extend from maxillary process towards the midline
Main overview of palatogenesis
Fusion of palatial processes along the midline and primary palate. Convergence with the nasal septum, separating the primitive oral cavity into oral and nasal cavities.
Process of palatogenesis
W6: formation of the primary palate = an extension of the fronto/medial nasal processes
W7: extension and growth of palatial shelves from the maxillary processes
W8: tongue drops - palatial shelves elevate above the tongue and extend towards the midline, contact and fuse along midline forming secondary palate.
