Development Flashcards
What is Development?
Development is concerned with improving people’s standard of living and quality of life.
Development means change + growth and is occurring continuously love over the world.
What is the Brandt Line?
The Brandt line divides the world into a ‘rich north’ and a ‘poor south’.
The commission used GDP levels of individual countries to produce a map with a ‘rich north’ and a ‘poor south’.
Development is continuous so some countries no longer fit so comfortably in the ‘poor south’ eg. Brazil, South Africa, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, China and India.
How to measure development.
Differences in development are measured using the wealth of a country based on its GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP per capita).
GDP per capita is the total income of a country in US $ per year divided by the number of people in the population.
MEDC’s and LEDC’s
High GDP per capita = MEDC’s
Low GDP per capita = LEDC’s
MEDC’s - More Economically Developed Countries
LEDC’s = Less Economically Developed Countries
What’s a development indicator and what do they do?
A development indicator is data that shows how developed a place is.
They give an insight into how developed a country is in one area eg. wealth.
Examples of development indicators.
- life expectancy
- adult literacy rate
- infant mortality rate
- birth rate
- death rate
- GDP
- GNI
What are economic indicators?
Examples
These are about money.
Eg. GDP, GDP per person
What are social indicators?
Examples
These are about people, usually health care + education.
Eg. birth rate, % undernourished, population density, adult literacy rate + phone lines were 1000 people.
What are composite indicators and how are they better?
Even if there is a best single indicator it cannot give a perfect picture of development.
It is best to use a composite indicator like the United Nations Human Development Indicator (HDI) because it takes into account economic wealth + social well-being.
What indicators does HDI include?
- income per person
- literacy rates
- life expectancy
