Development ππ΅ Flashcards
What is DEVELOPMENT?
DEVELOPMENT is a process of change and growth in a place; it should be for the better (but it is not always). It is about improving the quality of life for people
How do we determine how DEVELOPED a country is?
To determine how DEVELOPED a country is, we use DEVELOPMENT indicators
What is GDP and what type of inductor is it?
GDP is the total value of goods and services a country produces a year (it is given in US dollars $). GDP is an economic indicator because it refers the money and wealth
What are the 2 two types of DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS we can use?
> Social (people)
> Economic (money)
What is GDP PER CAPITA?
GDP PER CAPITA is what each person in the country would earn if this amount were shared out equally
Which country has the highest GDP PER CAPITA?
Qatar > $132,000 πΆπ¦
Which country has the lowest GDP PER CAPITA?
Somalia > $400 πΈπ΄
As a country DEVELOPSβ¦
β¦ it produces more goods and services. So the countryβs GDP PER CAPITA rises over the years
What is wrong with only looking at GDP/ GDP PER CAPITA when thinking about DEVELOPMENT?
It does not tell us whether a country provides clean safe water, good health care or any other things such as those. So we need SOCIAL indicators too, such as life expectancy
Give 7 examples of SOCIAL indicators:
> Life expectancy > Adult literacy rate > Infant mortality > Number of doctors per thousand people > Access to clean safe water > Enrolment in primary school > Daily calorie consumption
What is meant by βinfant mortality rateβ?
The number of babies who die before their first birthday in any given year (per 1000)
