What is development
Development is about improving people’s lives and allowing individuals and societies to progress across a wide range of areas.
Development Patterns in the world
- Africa has a high concentration of less developed countries
- in Europe there are lots of more developed countries
- Mainly the countries in the Northern and eastern hemispheres have more developed countries
Economic indicators of development
GDP per capita - measures the average income per year
Social Indicators
Number of doctors per 1000 people
Average age of mother at first birth
Recent age of 5 year olds underweight
Percentage of the population with access to treated drinking water
Adult Literacy
Life expectancy
Technological Indicators
Number of mobile phones per 100 people
Number of broadband subscribers per 100 people
Percentage of the country with access to electricity
Composite indicators
HDI - life expectancy, mean years of schooling and gdp per capita
World happiness index
What is the development gap?
It refers to the difference in levels of development between more economically developed countries and less economically developed countries
How to bridge the development gap?

What is aid?
Aid is the voluntary transfer of resources from, one country (usually developed) to another (usually developing) for altruistic purposes.
Bilateral Aid
Aid that’s given from one government of a country direct to the government of another.
Multilateral Aid
Resources that are given by rich countries to supranational organisations such as the United Nations and from there to recipient countries.
Emergency Aid
It is often given after a natural disaster (eg food, water, medication, tents)
Development aid
It is usually monetary and funds development projects
Tied Aid
This is bilateral aid that is given with strings attached.
